Things to Do in Skåne – Discover Romeleåsen and the Area from The Lodge

Things to Do in Skåne – an Hour from Copenhagen, Between Malmö and Österlen

High on the ridge of Romeleåsen in Genarp — 167 meters (about 550 feet) above sea level, in the far south of Sweden — the best things to do in Skåne begin right outside the door. The Skåneleden hiking trail winds past our entrance, we are part of the Romeleslingan loop, and we sit in the heart of Skåne’s newest UNESCO biosphere reserve, Storkriket. The location is hard to beat: about an hour from Copenhagen and its international airport, just across the Øresund Bridge, 20 minutes from Lund and 30 from Malmö — as close to the city as it is to Österlen’s chalk-white sand beaches. If you are driving, follow road 11 toward Simrishamn — the road that carries on out to Österlen — and turn off at Genarp about a third of the way, up onto the ridge.

Make The Lodge your base for a day — or several — full of nature, adventure and luxurious calm. Hike, ride a railbike, play golf, head out on a mountain bike, or take a dip in an old quarry. Begin or end the day with a day spa high above the treetops, a lunch with a view on the veranda, or a night up in the canopy. This is the side of Skåne many travelers drive straight past on the way to Österlen — and the one worth slowing down for. Here are our favorites in the area.

Hike the Skåneleden – Right Outside the Door

The Skåneleden trail starts literally at our entrance. Romelestigen (the Blue Trail) leads through beech forest and open views across the Skåne fields, and you can carry on south toward the woods of Häckeberga or north toward the Skrylle area. Perfect before a spa visit — or after you have lingered over our summer lunch out on the veranda. Come back, sink into the 38°C (100°F) infinity pool, and let your legs rest.

Hunt for the Giant Finn’s Stones

As you walk, keep an eye on the boulders among the trees — this landscape has a tale of its own. Long ago, the legend goes, a monk named Saint Lawrence wanted to build a church in Lund, but it would take forever. So a giant offered to do it, and fast. In return he wanted the monk’s eyes — unless Saint Lawrence could guess the giant’s name before the church was finished. The monk reluctantly agreed, and the giant got to work. Night after night he tore loose enormous blocks of stone up on Romeleklint, the highest point of the ridge, and hauled them on his back across the dark fields into Lund, where Lund Cathedral slowly rose — a cathedral consecrated back in 1145, nearly nine centuries ago.

Just as the very last stone was about to go in, the monk came running: he had overheard the giant’s wife singing a lullaby to their child, naming “father Finn.” “Finn!” he shouted — and in that instant the giant turned to stone. To this day Finn stands down in the cathedral crypt, hugging his pillar, with his wife and child on another column nearby.

You can reach Romeleklint — where Finn and his family are said to have lived — on foot along the Romelestigen trail. Lace up your boots, head for the top, and look for the giant’s stones among the trees; you just might find one of his own. Right next door rises Väderkullen, the hill that gave The Lodge its name. And if you look out from up here on a still morning and see mist lying low between the trees? That is just the steam from Finn’s wife, Gerda, putting on her morning coffee. For the whole legend, it is beautifully told over at Kulturportal Lund.

Körsbärsdalen – Cherry Blossom and Nature on Romeleåsen

A few minutes away, south of Veberöd, lies Körsbärsdalen — a hilly nature reserve that, for a few magical days in late April and early May, turns white with blossoming wild cherry trees. For longer trails and a visitor center with a café, the Skrylle area is a short way north, and the varied Risen nature reserve sits just southeast of Genarp.

Dalby Quarry – a Swim in the Green

In the Knivsåsen nature reserve, east of Dalby, you will find Dalby stenbrott — a flooded old quarry of clear, green-tinged water, ringed by steep cliffs and lush beech forest. It is a beautiful spot for a summer swim, with pretty paths looping around the water. Swimming is at your own risk and the municipality advises against jumping from the cliffs — but as a place to cool off and take in the view, it is hard to top.

Storkriket – Sweden’s Newest Biosphere Reserve

The Lodge sits right inside Storkriket, named Sweden’s eighth UNESCO biosphere reserve in autumn 2025. It stretches between Lund, Sjöbo and Eslöv and ranks among the country’s most species-rich landscapes — storks, rolling fields, woodland and Lake Vombsjön. Several hiking trails run through it, all setting off from Hasslemölla farm. To stay and dine with us is to be a guest in the middle of it.

Ride a Railbike Along Romeleåsen

A stone’s throw away, in Björnstorp, sits Dressincykling Romeleåsen. Pedal an old-fashioned railbike — a pedal-powered trolley on the rails — along the disused Simrishamn railway between Björnstorp and Veberöd, through forest and open fields at the foot of the ridge. It is a lovely, slightly offbeat outing for couples and families alike (season April–October).

Adventures for Groups – Mountain Biking & Team-Building in Häckeberga

Just south of us, by Lake Häckebergasjön, is our friend and partner RA Äventyr & Utveckling at Camp Häckeberga. They run genuinely fun, nature-based adventures for groups — guided mountain biking on Romeleåsen’s trails, canoeing, a high-ropes course, archery and team-building. It pairs perfectly with a conference or kickoff with us: full speed in the outdoors by day, then warm water, a good meal and a soft bed back at The Lodge.

Golf in Skåne – Courses in Forest and Nature on Romeleåsen

The courses up here on and around Romeleåsen are known for weaving through woodland and tall trees — unusual for golf in Skåne, which is more often played out on open plains. Closest are Romeleåsens Golfklubb (about 10 minutes) and Naturligtvis Golf & Country Club here in Genarp, with Sjöbo Golfklubb a quarter of an hour away. Play a round in the green, then unwind in the pool afterward.

Romeleslingan – Explore the Whole Neighborhood

We are a proud part of Romeleslingan — a loop of small local artisans, entrepreneurs and producers around Romeleåsen: farm shops, art, cafés, castles and experiences. Expect everything from cheese farms and ceramics to horseback riding and canoeing — a perfect way to get to know the neighborhood and all things local across a full day.

Day Trip to Österlen — with Lund and Malmö on the Way Back

The best day trip from here heads east, away from the traffic and deeper into Skåne. Österlen — sometimes called “the Swedish Provence” — has Ales Stenar standing high above the sea, the apple town of Kivik, a string of small vineyards, and some of Sweden’s most beautiful chalk-white beaches. Pack a picnic and walk the endless sweep of sand at Sandhammaren, often voted Sweden’s finest; settle in on family-friendly Mälarhusen; or seek out the almost exotic Knäbäckshusen, where the dunes tumble dramatically down to the water.

And since you will most likely be heading back toward Copenhagen and the airport, here is the bonus: Lund and Malmö sit right on the way. Stop in Lund to see the cathedral — and while you are down there, take the few steps into the crypt to say hello to the giant Finn; you know him now. His wife and child stand on another column nearby. Or pause in Malmö for Lilla Torg and the Turning Torso before you cross the Øresund Bridge.
